5% Local Coalition Steering Committee Members
Carla Koop
Carla lives in San Pablo and has just begun to transform her lawn into a fruit and vegetable garden! As the Community Outreach Specialist for the Rosie the Riveter/ World War II Home Front National Historical Park, she hopes to enhance the efforts of local groups such as the 5% Local Coalition by linking their projects to the rich history of Richmond during the WWII era. WWII Victory Gardens are an important historical model for the local foodshed movement, as they produced 40% of the produce consumed in the US during WWII.

He now directs Urban Tilth, manages the Lincoln School Farm, and is working to get Wildcat Farm (the 1/2 acre hillside in his backyard) into production. Park, Kristan (wife), Kai (son), Lola (daughter), and June (daughter) have lived in unincorporated west Contra Costa County near Alvarado Park since 2005.
Jessie Alberto
Jessie Alberto began gardening and worm composting last year at Richmond High School and quickly became one of the leaders of the garden program there. He began volunteering with Urban Tilth in January of 2008 and now works 5 afternoons a week at Lincoln School Farm and Verde Partnership Garden. Jessie graduatd from RHS in June of 2008 and now attends Contra Costa College. He plans to eventually transfer to a UC and major in Environmental Engineering and/or Sustainable Agriculture. Jessie also works for the Watershed Project managing the habitat garden right across from Berryland/Lincoln School Farm.
Jessie Kurtz-Nicholl
Jesse Kurtz-Nicholl lives in San Francisco and has been teaching at Richmond High School for 4 years. With the dedication of the Youth Mentors and Educators Club at Richmond High, Jesse has started a community garden on the campus of Richmond High. Jesse’s main gardening takes place at the community garden and is always excited about food coming out of the ground. Jesse supports the 5% Local Coalition because he believes the most essential part of our daily living, our food system is dangerously out of balance and needs to be restored through local food production.
